What are the materials for optoelectronic components

Sep 05,2025

The materials for optoelectronic components mainly include the following types:

Core semiconductor materials

Gallium Arsenide (GaAs): Used for manufacturing photonic components such as lasers and photodetectors, it combines high electron mobility and direct band structure, and can achieve integration of light emission and electronic control modules.

Indium phosphide (InP): commonly used in optical modules, lasers, sensors, and other devices, it has become a key raw material for AI high-speed computing and optical chips due to its high saturation electron drift speed and low luminescence loss.

Silicon (Si): A substrate material widely used in integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices, such as silicon-based heteroepitaxy technology, which can reduce the cost of optoelectronic integration.

photoconductive material

Germanium (Ge): Early used in infrared optical devices, now mostly used as the core material for photodetectors.

Indium tin oxide (ITO): used for transparent conductive layers, such as conductive films in touch screens and liquid crystal displays.

Packaging and structural materials

Polyimide (PI): Used for flexible circuit substrates, high temperature resistant and bendable.

Epoxy resin: encapsulates chips and substrates, moisture-proof and resistant to mechanical stress.

Other key materials

Silver nanowires/graphene: a transparent conductive material that replaces traditional ITO for flexible displays.

PEDOT: Conductive polymer material used in flexible circuits and anti-static coatings.

These materials are widely used in fields such as fiber optic communication, optoelectronic switch arrays, and laser radar by integrating photons and electronic components.
